What is the facing (or sitting) direction of my apartment (condominium)?
This is a difficult question to answer. Unlike landed properties that normally have a clear cut facing and sitting direction, identifying the facing (of sitting) of apartments is more difficult and is complicated by the fact that in addition to the building’s facing and sitting, each apartment unit can appear to have its own facing (door) and sitting. This is further compounded by the presence of the balcony which is interpreted by some as the facing!
So which is the facing direction? The jury is actually out on this case and different schools have their own interpretation.
But first why is the facing (or sitting) important?
For most schools, this direction is used to determine the auspicious and inauspicious sectors of the property. Therefore getting it right is absolutely crucial as wrongly interpreting the facing can result in a false reading and wrong recommendations.
Here, I will share with you my method of figuring out the facing of an apartment. To me, an apartment block is a single entity that is affected by the environment, much like a house. The only difference is that there are many sub-units within.
Therefore the facing of the apartment is the facing of the entire block. The facing is usually the yang side, or the side that has the street address. It is also usually the side where the apartment’s car porch is and where the lift lobby opens to.
I know that this is generalizing things and the facing of some apartments do not have the features describe above and are really ambiguous! This is where the knowledge, experience and judgment of the practitioner come in.
I have more information on facing and sitting here and you may wish to take a look.
From the apartment facing, the ‘qi’ chart and the owner’s natal chart, we can identify the units that are in an auspicious sector and suitable based on the natal chart.
Once I have determined the suitable units I will plot the ‘qi’ (showing the auspicious and inauspicious locations) chart of the unit by referencing the facing of the apartment, not the ‘facing’ (some people use the apartment unit’s door as the facing) of the unit.
That is it, apartment facing in Feng Shui 101.
Note: I have discussed this with many practitioners and most of those that I have spoken to employ this method in their practice. I am however not suggesting that the other methods used by practitioners (especially) of other schools are incorrect!
